GAME Plan for NETS-T Indicators

There are several indicators in the International Society of Technology in Education that I would want to improve on, although there are two in particular. The first one is under the third standard, Model Digital-Age Work and Learning, to collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and resources to support student success and innovation (International Society for Technology in Education, 2008). The second indicator is under the fifth standard, Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership, which states participate in local and global learning communities to explore creative applications of technology to improve student learning (International Society for Technology in Education, 2008). In order to improve these indicators, I plan on implementing the following GAME plan.

Goals
  • Increase the access for parents and community members to the internet and computers in general in order to help student success.
  • Begin participating in district wide initiatives to improve teacher education and use of technology in the classroom.

Actions
  • Work with parents directly to increase their use, access to, and understanding of the internet and tools on it that help students to improve their academic success.
  • Participate in national and international technology groups and/or forums to improve understanding of how technology is used in other schools.

Monitor
  • Monitor progress of parental and community involvement in technology based projects and initiatives.
  • Work with district members to improve national and international relationships.

Extend
  • Invite parents into the classroom on a day where the class will have the laptops in order to allow all parents to work with their students on the technology we use in the classroom.
  • Work with other schools on video-conferencing and chatting to allow students to work with others.

  1. Hi Nicole,

Like you, I feel like I have much room for improvement when fulfilling the indicators in the National Educational Technology Standards. I think increasing access to Internet and computer usage will be a difficult task to undertake. How do you plan on providing more access to parents? I really like your idea of inviting parents in for a day to work on a project with their students using your laptops and various digital tools. This would be a great way for parents to see how technology is being used during school. Another idea would be to have a technology information session for your parents in the beginning of the school year. During this meeting you could share with students projects you have done in the past using technology and various tools you will be using this year with their students. This would be a great way to even share with students guidelines and safety precautions that are set in place when their students are using the internet and technology tools. Giving parents a forum in which they can ask questions and view activities students will be participating in throughout the school year will hopefully make parents more comfortable with the technology tools.

I also really like your idea of video conferencing and chatting with students in other tools. You could also use this resource during staff meetings to communicate with other educators and share ideas.

    1. Chelsea,
Thank you for your comments. In order to provide more access to parents, I will assist them in applying for a program sponsored by our city to help parents of students get computers as well as providing them with time in my classroom to work with me in finding resources for their children. I believe that if the parents also set examples for responsible use of technology the students will be more willing to do so.
As you suggested, I do host monthly technology meetings that are open to all of my parents.
Having a forum for parents is a great idea, I think I will start one for next year. Thank you for that suggestion!

  2. Nicole,

I agree with you that an important goal of teachers today is to help parent increase their use of technology. This is important because parents need to understand what their students are involved in so that they can assist them and monitor their use. Do you live and teach in an area where their is not much access to technology at home? I like your idea of having parents visit the classroom when the computers are in use. It would be a great idea to do this at the beginning of the year in an afterschool, evening presentation where you could share some of the programs that they will be using throughout the school year. As you know, there are so many great, free programs that are available for students to use, but they will need their parents assistance or permission at home, so a parent presentation would be a great forum to share that information. Also, have you ever looked into grants or other programs that will help get some computers and the Internet into the hands of parents and families that can not afford it. I have done some work with the Department of Energy (DOE), and they often donate their old computers, which aren't that old, to schools. You could find some places that donate their older computers and share that information with your parents and help them to access computers for their home so that the students are able to keep up with other students who do have computer and Internet access. Would your school allow or encourage you to have a parent meeting about technology use?

  4. Hey Nicole,
After reading your blog post and Rachel's, I arrived at the conclusion that you could also benefit from the information I shared with Rachel at: http://mrsgehaskindergarten-rachel.blogspot.com.
I admire your desire to share technology with the community and in so doing, helping your students to achieve academic success. What I plan on doing after I have finished my Masters here at Walden is to do a presentation to other educators at the annual national education conference. I will apply for a session in sharing exemplary practices. I know I will be accepted because I did it before on developing behaviour and social skills. I wish you all the success! I know your students, parents, community and nation will benefit greatly from your work and contribution in technology to the society. There is no dream that is too big to be achieved. Follow your dreams, as you learn more you will have more dreams. You will be successful!

  5. Nicole, I found the greatest app that you can use to stay in touch with parents using technology. It is called Remind101, you should really check it out. I also feel as though parent interaction is very important and needs to be stressed.
I am so very excited this year I will be going to a technology charter school. I hope here I will not be one of the few teachers using technology but can learn from others.
Your goals show that you are a very dedicated educator...Keep it up!
